Tech Update - Internet speed and Bandwidth Use

Teachers,

Since our return from spring break we have noticed increase use of Bandwidth which is causing a general slowdown of Internet access. By cross referencing a snap shot of our users and the use of bandwidth we've determined that there has been an increase of downloading and streaming during the school day. This causes an Internet slow down for everyone. Here are a few recommended practices that may help improve internet speed.

Avoid downloading and streaming music, radio and videos during the school day unless absolutely necessary for teaching and learning.

Many video and music files can be downloaded before and after school, saved and used from your hard drive or a server during the school day.

Avoid having multiple students searching video and music at the same time. assign the task to one or two students when occurring during the school day.

Avoid running web based applications in the background and on auto start up like Skype MSM, etc. These applications should not start automatically and only be run when needed.

Remind students that they should not be streaming or downloading music and video files during the school day unless requested by a teacher.

Only use "Youtube" directly when necessary. While researching this issue I came across a statement saying filtering Youtube solved all Bandwidth Internet speed issue at a stateside school.

Keep Computing!

Discussion was also held on user name changes. We suggested using email address as user name for blackboard. What are your thoughts. No decision made yet and changes would not take place until next year.

Email Address: Check for proper address spelling in the Email Directory. A misspelled address will cause it to be undeliverable.

File Management: Is a basic and maybe one of the most valuable skills a computer user can have. Organizing you files for easy access and backing them up on a regular basis is an expected practice when using School owned laptops. It is a common practice in Laptop programs to solve a software problem by wiping the hard drive clean and re-cloning the laptop. This mean all personal files would be deleted. This and Hard drive crashes is why backing up your files is so important.

Teacher Technology Skill Profiencies: Learn the skills you need to use a variety of digital tools by visiting Atomic learning anytime anywhere through the link on the library website.
